Tip 1: Use video

Let’s be real. Video chatting is awkward. But it’s also too valuable to go without. Facial expressions, social queues and body language are insanely important for how we communicate.

Tip 2: Don’t be afraid of icebreakers.

When team members are isolated, they might feel weird in virtual meetings (see: awkward video chatting). Especially now, it’s important to check in with your team, and make sure everyone’s healthy, safe and supported.

Tip 3: Take advantage of screen-sharing

Especially during presentations. It saves time and keeps everyone on the same page, so you can keep focusing on moving the meeting forward.

Tip 4: Hold internal and external meetings virtually.

Virtual meetings take some getting used to, so you might be tempted to only bring out the fancy technology when meeting with a client or customer. We get it, but hosting internal meetings using the same methods lets you practice. Trust us — no one likes technical difficulties during big external meetings.

Tip 5: Close programs you won’t be using. 

In an in-person meeting, it’s probably not a good idea to check your Twitter…so you shouldn’t do it in a virtual meeting, either. Close out of distracting sites or programs, and make sure you’re focused on the conversation.
